You Gotta Have FAITH

This theme comes up again and again in my life. Faith. Belief in something, anything. The world can be cruel, the world can seem cold and hopeless. But every once in a while something happens which renews my faith.

For 11 years I have been pretty much against father's day. My dad died in 95 and I have just never really accepted it. My wife and I weren't going to have kids. I was never going to have a father again and I was never going to be a father. That idea always hits me the hardest on Father's day. It didn't help that I managed a men's baseball team, and all the out of work fathers in my league would gloat about how it was father's day so their wives couldn't bitch about them playing baseball.

Then a tragedy happened. My wife's aunt died suddenly, and we became the guardians of a 13 year old. It has been up and down, and changed my life in many ways. We knew going into it thata that was how it was going to be.

There has been a lot of crying and door slamming. There have been a lot of fights about homework and the lack thereof. Lately she calls me daddy. On Father's Day this year, she got me an ipod. For a lot of reasons it has to rank as one of the greatest gift of my life. But really she is the great gift.
